A 17-year-old student was killed following a stabbing and struggle with an 18-year-old man during a lunch break at a southern California high school, authorities said Saturday.
The two had “a dating relationship,” the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said.Authorities weren’t releasing the girl’s name Saturday, a sheriff’s department spokeswoman told CNN. The couple began arguing during a late Friday morning lunch break at South East High School in South Gate. The man struck the teen with his fists and pushed her to the ground, authorities said. He then stabbed her several times before he was subdued by an on-campus Los Angeles police officer, a school administrator and another student, authorities said. The girl was later pronounced dead at a local hospital, authorities said. The administrator and other student suffered minor lacerations, the sheriff’s department said. The man then claimed he had placed explosives at a hospital parking structure and several other locations, but the sheriff’s arson-explosive detail didn’t find any suspicious devices, authorities said. The man is being detained as the investigation continues, the sheriff’s office said.
The man stabbed the female student with some sort of sharp object, said Monica Carazo, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles Unified School District. The school administrator who intervened was a female dean of the school, added Carazo. The school was locked down during the incident, officials said. South Gate is a city of about 100,000 people roughly eight miles south of Los Angeles.
