Large iOS Security Threat

You’re browsing the Internet on your iPhone or iPad when you’re suddenly prompted for some personal information. But you’re no dummy: Before you enter it, you check the URL bar to confirm that you really are on a trusted site. When you’re sure, you type in the information. Careful as you were, you still may have handed sensitive data to a bad guy.

How is that possible when you’re absolutely certain that you’re on a trustworthy website? Because right now you can’t trust the URL bar on your iOS device’s mobile Safari browser, thanks to a security exploit.

The exploit was first discovered by David Vieira-Kurz of MajorSecurity. It affects the mobile Safari browser on iOS 5.1 and has been tested on the iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, second-generation iPad and third-generation iPad. According to Vieira-Kurz, the exploit is possible thanks to an error in how new windows are opened using a javascript method:

This can be exploited to potentially trick users into supplying sensitive information to a malicious website, because information displayed in the address bar can be constructed in a certain way, which may lead users to believe that they’re visiting another website than the displayed website.

MajorSecurity has created a demonstration of the exploit. You can check it out by following this link on a device which is running iOS 5.1. After pressing the “demo” button on that website, you will see Safari open a new window which displays “http://www.apple.com” in the URL bar, even though the website you’re viewing is actually hosted on “http://www.majorsecurity.net.”

There’s no fix for the issue right now, but it shouldn’t take long for Apple to patch the exploit. In the meantime, you should be careful about which links you follow.

Angry Birds Space Is Released

Apple Receives Complaints That The New iPad Is Heating Up

APPLE’s latest hot ticket seems to be a tad too hot to hold, some users are reporting. New iPad owners on the MacRumors forums and Apple’s own support community complain that the slab’s lower left corner can get a little warm during extended use. Don’t get excited though, reports seem to vary by user — some are reporting that their tablet becomes too uncomfortable to hold while others say that it only gets “slightly warm” and that it’s “expected.” How’s your new iPad treating you? Apple Expects to Spend $45 Billion Over Three Years

CUPERTINO, California—March 19, 2012—Apple® today announced plans to initiate a dividend and share repurchase program commencing later this year.

Subject to declaration by the Board of Directors, the Company plans to initiate a quarterly dividend of $2.65 per share sometime in the fourth quarter of its fiscal 2012, which begins on July 1, 2012.

Additionally, the Company’s Board of Directors has authorized a $10 billion share repurchase program commencing in the Company’s fiscal 2013, which begins on September 30, 2012. The repurchase program is expected to be executed over three years, with the primary objective of neutralizing the impact of dilution from future employee equity grants and employee stock purchase programs.

“We have used some of our cash to make great investments in our business through increased research and development, acquisitions, new retail store openings, strategic prepayments and capital expenditures in our supply chain, and building out our infrastructure. You’ll see more of all of these in the future,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “Even with these investments, we can maintain a war chest for strategic opportunities and have plenty of cash to run our business. So we are going to initiate a dividend and share repurchase program.”

“Combining dividends, share repurchases, and cash used to net-share-settle vesting RSUs, we anticipate utilizing approximately $45 billion of domestic cash in the first three years of our programs,” said Peter Oppenheimer, Apple’s CFO. “We are extremely confident in our future and see tremendous opportunities ahead.”

The Race To The 25 Billionth App

AS of today, almost 25 BILLION (Yes, billion with a B) have been downloaded from the Apple App Store. The current number of apps that have been downloaded (as of the publication of this article) is about 24,525,000,000. Apple is hosting a contest to see who will be the winner to download the 25 billionth app. If you happen to be the lucky winner, you could win a $10,000 (USD) gift card to the Apple App store. iTunes Changes Song Preview

Earlier today, Apple iTunes changed the song preview duration. Previously, you could listen to a song for about 1:30 before purchasing the song. Now, they made a switch back to the 30 second preview. You now have one minute less to decide if you like the song and if you would like to purchase it.

Company Adds Your App to Top 25 List For Money

Yesterday, a TouchArcade thread was posted that warned about fraudulent App promotion services that guarantee Top 25 rankings for a modest fee. According to the poster, these services utilize automated scripts or bots to artificially boost free app rankings into the Top charts. At least one company denied the claims in the thread.

PocketGamer picked up on the story based on the forum thread:

For $5,000, said company will allegedly utilise bots that will download a developer’s app over and over again until it has broken into the top 25 charts. At this point, the developer’s app will have received sufficient customer exposure to attract downloads from real people.

In an apparent response, Apple has just posted a reminder (via iClarified) to developers, warning them not to manipulate App Store chart rankings.

AVID Video Editor Now iPad App

Avid is well-known for its chops as a maker of professional video editing suites, but on Thursday it grabbed some notice in consumer circles with a new offering for Apple’s (Nasdaq: AAPL) iPad 2.

Avid Studio, available from Apple’s App Store for a limited time at US$4.99, brings a solid set of video editing tools to the iPad.

For instance, clips can be quickly arranged along a storyboard. Frames can be precisely trimmed in the app’s timeline. Cuts can be made on the fly with the software’s razor tool.

Projects can be given a professional look and feel with high quality transitions, such as fades and dissolves. Pan and zoom Ken Burn effects can be used to add interest to projects using still photos.

Lots of Effects

In addition, the user can create motion titles and graphics with full control over text, font, color, size, position and rotation.

Picture-in-picture effects, multi-layer 3D animations and creation of composite video tracks are also part of the software’s repertoire.

The app will work with any media stored on an iPad — photos, video and audio — and it can use the cameras in the iPad to bring in photos and video directly without the user having to close the application.

It also allows the user to organize clips on the iPad in a number of familiar ways — albums, events, faces and others.

What’s more, audio can be trimmed to fit clips, its volume levels controlled and sound faded in or out of a clip. Better yet, multiple audio tracks can be laid down to create a layered soundtrack of music, audio and sound effects.

Easy Sharing

Sharing is made easy by the app, too, with quick uploads to YouTubeFacebookand other sharing options.

Projects created in the app can also be exported to Avid’s Windows desktop app for more heavy-duty editing. That elegant workflow conduit isn’t available from the app to iMovie, but you can convert a project to a video file and import it into iMovie that way.

“We’re trying to take the power and richness of the Avid Studio Line for consumers and prosumers and bring it to mobile,” Lee Whitmore, Avid’s segment marketing director, told MacNewsWorld.

“It’s all about empowering that creative person who wants to get right to making some terrific video and sharing it,” he added.

Better Than iMovie?

While Avid’s iPad app is powerful, it doesn’t have the muscle of Avid’s desktop app.

“You can finish a fantastic work product in the iPad app,” Whitmore noted, “but that connection of Avid Studio for the PC is super important because there are more things that folks are going to want to do.”

The iPad 2 doesn’t have a native video editor, but there is a version of iMovie for it. That means Avid will be competing with Apple’s app on the slate, which may not be a problem for some iPad users, especially those who yearn to work in the old Storyboard/Timeline interface that was an integral part of older versions of iMovie.

The ability to perform precise edits, a “super intuitive” user interface and easy sharing are features that stack up favorably against iMovie, according to Whitmore. Editing on mobile devices is an expanding area for video buffs, according to Jennifer O’Rourke, managing editor of Videomaker magazine. “But I don’t ever see it replacing the desktop because of all the things you need for high-end editing,” she told MacNewsWorld.

As a preview tool in the field, though, a tablet could be a valuable asset, she observed.

“For doing a quick base edit on location, it would be a great plus,” she said.

“You can get things down, take a look at it and see the order that you want them to have before you strike a set and realize you have to reshoot something,” she explained

LogMeIn Free iOS Application

THE people over at LogMeIn have recently release a free iOS application. The application was launched Dec. 22. For those of you who don’t know, LogMeIn is a service where you can remote access your computer(s). Personally I use it all the time and it is a lifesaver. You can also learn more by going to their website.

Anyway, for a long time they have not had a free iPhone/iPad application. They finally released one.

Apple Opens Grand Central Station

New York City just got a stunning new tourist attraction. Apple’s largest-ever retail venue opened on Friday at the historic Grand Central Terminal in Manhattan. Swarms of fans camped out for hours to be among the first to enter.

At 10am this morning, the 23,000 square foot Grand Central Terminal store finally opened doors for business and big crowds filled the concourse of the Terminal ahead of grand opening. Apple is handing out 4,000 black T-shirts with “Apple Store, Grand Central” graphic resembling a train arrival board, similar to that used as a blockade prior to the opening.

New York’s Metropolitan Transit Authority will rake in over $1 million per year as a result of the Apple’s lease on the terminal’s balcony space, although some have pointed out that Apple may have signed on for a sweeter deal than other Grand Central tenants. Writes CBS New York, the MTA “collects ‘percentage rent’ from every retailer except Apple. That is because the retailer cut a deal with the MTA for a straight lease, totaling about $1 million a year.” New York’s Committee on Corporations, Authorities and Commissions is currently investigating the 10-year agreement between Apple and the MTA, according to Pix 11.

The store is Apple’s fifth location in Manhattan.
