Large iOS Security Threat

An article from MSNBC.

You’re browsing the Internet on your iPhone or iPad when you’re suddenly prompted for some personal information. But you’re no dummy: Before you enter it, you check the URL bar to confirm that you really are on a trusted site. When you’re sure, you type in the information. Careful as you were, you still may have handed sensitive data to a bad guy.

How is that possible when you’re absolutely certain that you’re on a trustworthy website? Because right now you can’t trust the URL bar on your iOS device’s mobile Safari browser, thanks to a security exploit.

The exploit was first discovered by David Vieira-Kurz of MajorSecurity. It affects the mobile Safari browser on iOS 5.1 and has been tested on the iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, second-generation iPad and third-generation iPad. According to Vieira-Kurz, the exploit is possible thanks to an error in how new windows are opened using a javascript method:

This can be exploited to potentially trick users into supplying sensitive information to a malicious website, because information displayed in the address bar can be constructed in a certain way, which may lead users to believe that they’re visiting another website than the displayed website.

MajorSecurity has created a demonstration of the exploit. You can check it out by following this link on a device which is running iOS 5.1. After pressing the “demo” button on that website, you will see Safari open a new window which displays “” in the URL bar, even though the website you’re viewing is actually hosted on “”

There’s no fix for the issue right now, but it shouldn’t take long for Apple to patch the exploit. In the meantime, you should be careful about which links you follow.

The Race To The 25 Billionth App

AS of today, almost 25 BILLION (Yes, billion with a B) have been downloaded from the Apple App Store. The current number of apps that have been downloaded (as of the publication of this article) is about 24,525,000,000. Apple is hosting a contest to see who will be the winner to download the 25 billionth app. If you happen to be the lucky winner, you could win a $10,000 (USD) gift card to the Apple App store. So what are you waiting for, go ahead and start downloading some apps, you might be the winner.

You may also view official rules, and enter to win without purchase at their official website.

Apple Revamps Online Store

APPLE’s online store was down for “maintenance” for several hours a few days ago. During the down time Apple made a few changes in its online store’s appearance.

One immediately visible change is in the iPad model selection page, where Apple previously listed all 18 iPad 2 models available in the U.S. store. The company has replaced that system with a new, more dynamic process in which users first select a color, followed by a separate step in which they select a storage capacity. Users selecting a 3G model then proceed to a third step where they select whether they want an AT&T model or Verizon model. You can see the whole processed that I described below:

In another change, Apple has replaced its previous “within 24 hours” shipping estimate status with a new “in stock” indicator on a store-wide basis. The two terms appear to be synonymous, with models offering longer shipping estimates continuing to list their availability in terms of business days until shipping.

I really enjoy the new look and changes. They help make buying products online much easier to do.

Police Help In Search For Missing iPhone Prototype

THE San Fransisco Police Department has helped Apple find the missing iPhone 5 prototype.
AN article from Yahoo News:

San Francisco police have assisted Apple in the search for a prototype of the latest iPhone that went astray in a bar in a repeat of an embarrassing loss that took place last year. An Apple employee lost a yet-to-be-released iPhone 5 in a tequila bar in San Francisco’s Mission District in July, technology news site CNET reported this week. After the device was electronically tracked using GPS technology to a San Francisco house, four police officers and two Apple employees visited the home, the San Francisco police said in a statement distributed to news outlets.

“Apple employees called Mission police station directly, wanting assistance in tracking down a lost item,” the press release said.

“The two Apple employees met with the resident and then went into the house to look for the lost item,” it said. “The Apple employees did not find the lost item and left the house.”

A resident of the home, Sergio Calderon, 22, told SF Weekly that he has visited the bar where the phone was reportedly lost but he did not have the device. He said the search of his house took place in July.

Gizmodo published pictures and details of the iPhone prototype after buying it for $5,000 from a man who claimed to have found it in a beer garden where it was lost by an Apple software engineer.

Criminal charges have been filed against the man who purportedly found the iPhone 4 prototype and another who brokered the deal to sell it to Gizmodo. The pair pleaded not guilty on Thursday to misdemeanor charges in San Mateo County Superior Court.

New MacBook Air Released

TODAY Apple releaseda new MacBook Air.  With this new version of the MacBook Air, you get several things. These include new Intel cores, longer lasting battery, different ports on your laptop and much more.

First, the new MacBook Air is much faster. They have included the latest and most up-to-date Intel core processors that are out there. Apple is claiming that these new processors will increase the speed of the MacBook Air by up to 2.5 times.  The MacBook Air also features the Intel HD Graphics 3000 processor, this includes an on-chip engine for video encoding and decoding. That means you experience video playback and FaceTime calls that are smoother, more responsive, and more true to life.

Second, it will feature the ThunderBolt port. This port gives you access to a world of high-speed peripherals capable of transferring data up to 12 times faster than FireWire 800 and up to 20 times faster than USB 2.0. Or use the Thunderbolt port to connect the new Apple Thunderbolt Display and transform your ultracompact MacBook Air into a complete desktop workstation. This will make data transferring so much faster.

Third, ALL Flash Storage. Some of the devices like iPhone and iPad have already demonstrated the advantages of flash storage: reliability, speed, and efficiency. So they decided to use flash storage in the MacBook Air. With flash, your computer starts up very fast and accesses data quickly. Flash also gives MacBook Air the astonishing ability to remain in standby mode for up to 30 days. This means that you can open your MacBook Air and it will jump to life.

Next, there will be a backlit keyboard. As incredibly compact as MacBook Air is, it still manages to fit a full-size keyboard that makes typing as natural as it is comfortable. And now the keyboard is backlit, so you can type with ease in even the dimmest light. A built-in ambient light sensor detects changes in lighting conditions and adjusts the display and keyboard brightness automatically. From a seat in a sunny café to a seat on a cross-country red-eye, so you’ll always have the perfect lighting for any environment.

After that, they included a Multi-Touch trackpad. The Multi-Touch gestures in OS X Lion make everything you do on MacBook Air more intuitive, direct, and fun. And the spacious Multi-Touch trackpad is perfectly designed for them, whether it’s a three-finger swipe to activate Mission Control or a four-finger pinch to see all your apps in Launchpad. Gesture responses in Lion are smooth and realistic. So when you’re scrolling up and down a web page or swiping from one full-screen app to another, it’s almost like you’re touching what you’re seeing.

The sixth thing that they have added is minor for some people, it is the high resolution display and stereo speakers.   The 11-inch MacBook Air features a resolution equal to that of your typical 13-inch notebook, while the 13-inch MacBook Air wows with a resolution equivalent to a typical 15-inch notebook. This is something that I feel most people will not notice.

The last thing that I am going to cover in this article is the long lasting battery. Because of using the  space-saving flash storage there is room left for a bigger battery. With this battery you get up to 5 hours of battery life on a single charge on the 11-inch model and up to 7 hours on the 13-inch model. Put MacBook Air to sleep, and it enters standby mode to conserve battery life for up to 30 days. When you come back to your MacBook Air and open it up, it is on in a blink of an eye.

Some of the other things that Apple has talked about has either not changed or they are so small changes.

I hope you enjoyed this article.

iPhone Production is Slowed

THERE may not be a new iPhone this month, but that doesn’t mean Apple is sitting on their thumbs basking in the warm glow of summer. A new report claims that the company is slowing orders for iPhone 4 components, which can mean only one thing: New models ahoy!

MacRumors reported that PCB (printed circuit board) suppliers in Taiwan “have cut their quotes by 10 percent for the quarter,” all because Apple has decreased orders for their goods. According to everyone’s favorite Taiwanese tech website Digitimes, this summer slump could signal that the iPhone 4 is finally slowing down.

“The Taiwan-based PCB companies, which are shipping products for iPads and iPhones, have seen disappointing orders for these devices in the second quarter,” Digitimes sources reveal. “Orders thus far for June show no signs of a rebound.”

What does it all mean? Well, the slump is temporary while they await Apple’s orders for the next-generation iPhone expected to launch in September — although we still don’t know if it will be an iPhone 5 or what’s being billed as the “iPhone 4S,” a more modest spec bump that retains most of the design from the current model.

While the iPhone 4 may be slowing down production, iPad 2 demand remains high and sales growth is expected to continue its upward climb well into the third quarter of this year.

WWDC 2011: Over 100 Session Videos Now Available

APPLE has just released over 100 videos from World Wide Developers Conference (W.W.D.C.) 2011. So it will be just like if yow were to be sitting directly in the room. These videos are straight from the developer sessions at WWDC. These videos cover a very wide range of topics. I only recommend watching them to anyone who is a hardcore developer. Simply because if you are not, you will not have a clue of what they are talking about.

All About iCloud

HOPEFULLY everyone is surviving Monday alright. This post is about a week over due, so I apologize for that.

Exactly one week ago Apple held its annual World Wide Developers Conference. As you all know they released 3 new things. One of which is going to be iCloud. iCloud is like a replacement for the program MobileMe. MobileMe was a service that you had to pay Apple for, it was just like iCloud is going to be except with not nearly as many features.

iCloud is going to allow you to synchronize all data between all of your Apple devices. Apple’s CEO said “[it] Stores content and wirelessly pushes it to all of your devices”. There are some great new features, I am going to share almost all of them with you.

The first feature that I am going to talk about today is iTunes In The Cloud. This allows you to be able to download any previously purchased song for free. As an example lets say that I have an iPod touch and an iPad. If I have a good song such as Friday by Rebecca Black on your iPod Touch, and you just can’t get enough of that song so you want it on your iPad you can press the “Retrieve from the cloud” button and it is now on my iPad for no charge! Before there was this feature, you would have to go to your computer and sync it manually.

The next features are almost exactly the same except it is for Apps from the App store. Another one is for books from the iBooks store. It is so similar I do not need to go into more detail.

The fourth feature is Backup to the Cloud. This allows you to simply back up your songs, photos, videos, applications, even your device settings, and other precious data in Apple’s cloud. To do this you simply need your AppleID, Password, and WiFi access. There will be a storage limit for how much data can be backed up, but the number is very big so it is not something to worry about.

The program will automatically sync your Calendar, contacts, shared calendar {new feature}, mail to all of your iOS devices with no advertisements.

The last one that I am going to type about today is Documents in the cloud. It will automatically update your KeyNote, Pages, and Numbers documents or presentations automatically with out you needing to push any buttons. It does it so fast!

As Mr. Jobs said at the presentation “It just works”.

You get all of these features for FREE!!! When will it be avallible you may ask? Apple has not set a specific date, all they have told us is “This Fall”

Thanks For Reading, have a nice rest of the week.

Top Ten Lion Features

At the World Wide Developers Conference last week, they released 3 new things. One of which being the brand new Macintosh Operating System OSX Lion. With this new operating system, there are over 200 new features but today I am only going to show you the top 10.

Number 1 : Multi Touch Gestures

Apps will be controlled by different multi-touch gestures; including three fingered swipe, scroll, pinching and zooming.

Number 2 : Full Screen Software
Full screen applications are really going to take advantage of every pixel on your screen in Lion.  Editing video will be so much nicer, being able to work on a better screen. So full screen applications are going to be nice!

Number 3 : Mission Control

I already now that I’m going to like mission control.  If you like exposé, and easy access to Dashboard, Desktop, and fullscreen apps.  You are going to love Mission Control too.  The photo bellow shows Mission Control.  It is a whole over view of everything open on you computer.  Windows, Applications. Full screen applications, etc.

Number 4 : Mac App Store

This feature is not new, it has simply added a new detail to it. This is going to be the only place to purchase and download the Operating system Lion.

Number 5 : Launch Pad

Launch Pad is an over view of all of your applications. This feature will simply allow you to organize all of your applications on your operating system just like iOS. You have the ability to add them into folders as well.

Number 6 : Resume

Resume will be a good feature.  With Resume, your applications will reopen right where you last closed them.  When you have to do software updates and restart your Mac, everything will “Resume” right were you left off.

Number 7 : Auto Save

This feature will be extremely useful fore me. Auto Save simply automatically saves your data. So lets say that if you were working on typing a paper, for example. If you were to restart your computer with out saving it once, all of your data will be exactly like you left them.

Number 8 : Versions

This goes hand-in-hand with Auto Save. It will save individual versions of your document. So if you did something to the document you don’t like you can always revert back to any copy.  The interface looks very similar to Time Machine.

Number 9 : Air Drop

A Dropbox-type feature that allows you to get documents between computers. Incase you have multiple macintosh computers and you wish to work on something on different computers, now you can.

Number 10 :  Mail

This is also something that is not new, it has simply been revised and made better. With this version of Mail, you have a much better search interface and better results.

Thanks for reading, I hope you enjoyed it.

I decided to include the iOS 5 pictures in a separate post. Below is a photo gallery of the combined photos.

iOS 5 Features and Information

THIS post is going to be all about iOS 5 and the new features that it is going to bring to its users. Apple announced 10 of its best and most popular features. So I am going to do the same, here are the top new features that you can count on in the new version of the operating system for your smart Apple devices.

NUMBER 1 : Notifications

The first new feature that they released is a new notification user interface. This has been a large request for a long time. Finally Apple has given in and recreated their user interface.

For starters, they are going to have a new area called “Notifications Center”. This is the area where all of your notifications for everything is going to come in, such as SMS messages, MLB updates, Voice Mail messages, Facebook. They could not stop there, so they had to add your stocks, and current weather updates, all of the information is extracted from your Weather and Stock apps that come on the device when you first purchase it. This fixes several problems that we had before. The first complaint was that once you hit “ignore” there was no way of going back and looking at the notifications that had actually been displayed. Secondly, people were complaining of is that it interrupted whatever you were in the middle of. Third, they were not very organized. With the new and improved interface, they eliminate all of those problems.

They fix the first problem by creating a pull-down menu. Now when you are at your device, you can pull down with one finger from the very top of the display, and it will reveal Notifications Center and that will show you any push notifications that you have not taken care of. It solves the second problem of constant interruption by simply creating a small box that does a cute little animation on the very tip-top of the screen; telling you what program is notifying you and what is going on. You can either leave it alone and it will eventually disappear or you can tap it and it will make a beautiful transition into the application.

NUMBER 2 : NewsStand

The second new feature is called “NewsStand”. It does exactly what it sounds like. Basically what it does, is it allows you to purchase subscriptions to magazines, and newspapers and allows you to view them in one location. The subscriptions are charged just like every other Apple purchasing, through your credit card linked to your Apple ID. Another great thing is that it allows you to read offline. Right now, several major publishers have signed to allow this. There are certainly going to be more to come!

NUMBER 3 : Twitter Integration

The third new feature is Twitter Integration. To start off, there are over 1 Billion Tweets sent per week. My guess is that there a lot of people who have an iPhone and want to be able to have an easier time tweeting from it. To help the twitter users do this, they created “single sign-on”. This idea is so you only have to log in to Twitter once, not again and again. They have added twitter to: camera, maps, photos and possibly more. This allows you to easily tweet your location from the Maps application. With camera and photos, you can easily send your favorite pictures right on to Twitter. It is easy as electronically mailing the photo. So now you can send even more tweets, easier, and faster.

NUMBER 4 : Safari

Another feature is not really new, but they are making repairs; it is “Safari”. Safari counts for a little over 2/3 of all mobile web browsing. One of the key features they are really adding is the ability to view a web page in “reader”. Before watching the presentation and watching them explain it, I did not know what it did or how it worked. Now that I know what it does, it is a really nice feature that I will personally will start using much more often. Another feature of Safari is tabbed browsing. Why this was not on the very first version, I don’t know. But I am just happy that they started including this. It will increase my productivity well.

NUMBER 5 : Reminders

The fifth top feature Apple is going to be adding to iOS 5 is “Reminders”. Reminders is a nice way to be able to have lists of what you need to get accomplished. This will create a much more organized environment, also having a easy list-like interface.   You have the advantage of storing it all in one free application that comes with the operating system. It can also alert you with alarms, if you set it to do so. A brand new amazing feature is the ability to geo-tag your location. So basically what that means is that if you want it to do so, you can have an alert go off once you leave the building you are in.

NUMBER 6 : Camera

The next feature which happens to be number 6 on the list is the camera. This as you know, is just nothing new; they are simply adding features. They decided to add the things onto the iPhone camera because it is very popular. So popular that it is the second most device used to published to Flickr. So, here we go!

This is going to be much faster, that is the first repair. Something new that they will be adding is you will be able to double click the home button when the device is locked to reveal a new button. This button is what I like to call a “go-to-camera” button. It does exactly that. Before this new feature, it was hard to get your iPhone camera out when it was locked. Now this allows for the phone to be locked, you click the shortcut button and it takes you right to the camera. Now lets say that you have a passcode set. It does not matter, you click the button and you do not need to enter your code. As a security feature you can not view the camera roll until you have unlocked the iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch. Some other features they have added are the ability to use the “increase volume” button to take a picture, view grids to help take better pictures and the ability of “pinch to zoom”. One more major feature that they talked about was the editing. They have brought a hand-full of basic editing features from iPhoto to the camera. Some of the features that come are: crop, red eye, magic wand, and a few others.

NUMBER 7 : Mail

Seeing that ‘Mail’ is such a popular program, Apple decided to re-look at and see what they could add to make it better. Here are some things that Apple decided were important to include in iOS 5. Now you will have the ability to send emails with rich text. What is rich text? It is text that is BOLD, Italic, Colorful. Rich text is just a default on regular desktop computers. Now you have the ability to use this in your emails. They also included a feature which allows you to drag email addresses around. So now you can add to your TO field and your CC field just by dragging, with out having to start re-typing again. One minor one is that now you will ability to flag email addresses much easier. Something else that they have looked deeply into is that searching messages. Before your ability to search whole messages and the overall searching system was just not as good as Apple could have made it. I really can’t explain what is new with it; you need to get your hands on it. Finally, this one is going to affect the iPads the most. There are now more gesture abilities in Mail. So you can now hide/show the message list.

NUMBER 8 : PC Free

Now they have worked very hard on becoming “PC Free”. I will also create another post about this later on. Anyway, with Personal Computer Free ability you no longer have to plug in to your computer directly when you get a new device. Now you can simply “slide to setup”. This means that you do not have to wait to get home and plug in to set up your awesome new iPod, iPhone or iPad. You now also can get “over the air” software updates. Additionally there are delta updates.

NUMBER 9 : GameCenter

GameCenter currently has more users than XBOX Live, and GameCenter has been out for less than 1 year (9 months ago to be exact)! There are a few new things they have added, none of them are very large. Now you can view friends of your fiends. Also the function to discover new possible friends based on the games you play and the friends that you have. Similar to this there is game discovery. This recommends GameCenter enabled games for you based on your purchase history.

NUMBER 10 : iMessage

Apple has now announced something called “iMessage”. This is a brand new messaging system, and it is much more organized. It is one spot to receive text messages, pictures, videos, etc.. Now not only is this a new area to view things, you also can see other nice information. Some of which being delivery receipts, read receipts, and typing indication. Delivery and read receipts allow you to view if your message has been delivered, as well as if it has been read. So I guess you now get to know if your friend has read your text and is just totally blowing you off or not. Also, your conversations easily synchronize with all of your iPod touches, iPhones, and iPads with iMessage installed.

There you have it, those are just 10 of the 200 new features of iOS 5. iOS 5 is scheduled to release this fall, no specific date has been announced.

iWork Now Available In Mobile App Store

APPLE has just released the iWork suite for all iOS users. So now you have a mobile version of KeyNote, Numbers, and Pages. This is probably going to be most popular for iPad users, rather than iPod Touch. The reason being is that it is just not as easy and comfortable to work on a whole presentation or project on such a small screen. What this allows, is that now you can give presentations to your workers, or others right off of your iPad, this is assuming that you do have the HDMI connector.

The applications come with the same great templates, headers, text, etc. that are in the desktop version. KeyNote even allows for animations to be added to the slides. For Numbers, as hard as it may seem to work on a spread sheet it really was not that hard. I played around with it a little and found that it was not too difficult. They created a whole new (good) look to the application. They even added a new keyboard style that is only for Numbers.

They cost $9.99 each from the store. However if you do already have iWork for iPad, you do get a free update to the latest version. To get these applications, you can either search for them or go to the links below:

Samsung Demands iPad 3 and iPhone 5 from Apple

SAMSUNG has demanded to see the next version of the iPhone. It is probably going to be called the iPhone 5 or the iPhone 4S. Samsung is requiring this to prove that there are no patent disputes or infringements. This all came a few days after Apple demanded that Samsung hand over the Droid Charge, Infuse 4G, Galaxy S II, Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Galaxy Tab 8.9 to see whether or not these products should be blocked. So Apple just got what they served up.
The reason Apple can not just say “no” and not allow Samsung to see the upcoming products are because it is a court order. I find this odd because as far as Samsung knows, there is not going to be an iPhone 5/4S or iPad 3. But all of these lawyers know what they are talking about, so I am not going to question them.

Below is the copy of the court order.

Apple to Create Smaller SIM Cards

AT&T recently proposed a new SIM card. What is nice about this is that it is amazingly smaller. This would mean that your SIM card slot on the side of your iPhone, or any phone for that fact, will be much smaller. We really just have to wait to see if this gets approved and how it will turn out.
